THE ______ OF _______, THE LAUNDRY,  2016

11th November, 6:00 - 9:00pm

The Laundry Artspace

3 Ashfield Street, East Brisbane, Queensland, Australia 4169

For the exhibition, we decided to make an object in homage to our collaboration. Cup features the profiles of each artist and references the well-known visual illusion of the two faces and cup.  This optical trick is known as the Rubin Vase and the interpretation of the image demonstrates that the whole is more than the sum of its’ parts.  This tension between figure and ground, often referred to as gestalt psychology has long occupied philosophers and theorists.

As artists, we have often been prompted to ask what the truth is about the art object. Is it merely a vessel? Or is the truth of the work about the coming together of artistic visions and attitudes to process? Are the artists stronger when they work together?

We don’t know if we have found the truth yet. But the idea of the holy grail, the relic of truth that Christians seek, is often symbolised by a goblet similar to the one that we have made, so we must be on the right track.
