GENEVIEVE STAINES - SYNTHETIC POMP PRECINCT

August 2010

Ryan Renshaw Gallery Window Space

137 Warry St, Brisbane QLD 4006

Staines’ new body of work, Synthetic Pomp Precinct, is a response to the contemporary crusade for cultural and urban reinvention.

Exemplified by obscene projects such as the redevelopment of Brisbane’s King George Square, re-urbanisation forcefully and desperately seeks to coerce humans into inhabiting place differently, although we often don’t know how we are actually to do this. Are boxes ticked when, as we peruse these desolate environments, we mimic CAD sketches; we and others become model miniatures, scattered and indifferent with our headphones, shopping bags and takeaway coffees(?). In Phase 1, Staines takes slapdash photographs of B-grade worksites, and carefully transforms them into heroin chíc stages for imaginary posturing. Synthetic Pomp Precinct is not just re-fabrication of digital surface, it is a concept district for our new lifestyles.

The exhibition will be opening on Friday Aug 18, 6pm-8pm at Ryan Renshaw Gallery, 137 Warry St, Fortitude Valley. This will be the second installation in Ryan Renshaw's front window box. We hope you can make the opening, or check it out in the month that it's up. Co-inciding with the show will be Simeon Nelson and Wiliam Mackinnon's exhibition in the Ryan Renshaw Gallery.
